Remembering Ralph B. Post

Snapshot of Ralph B. Post, a long-time doctor in Ballston Spa.

Dr. Ralph B. Post was born on January 23, 1888 and trained at Albany Medical School.  Following service in World War I, he set up his medical practice in Ballston Spa.  In 1919 he purchased 143 Milton Avenue and in 1920 he married Agnes Hayes.  They never had children.

Dr. Post served the community of Ballston Spa for over 40 years and is reputed to have delivered over 3,000 babies.  He was chief of staff at Benedict Memorial Hospital and a charter member of the Ballston Spa Rotary Club.

One former patient of his remembers him as being very gruff, but also kind-hearted.  He was “wonderful” when she had difficulties during her third pregnancy and he made a house call every couple of days during that period.  His normal schedule was to go to the hospital in the morning for rounds, and to have office hours and make house calls in the afternoon and evening.  He did not take appointments but instead you stopped by his office and waited your turn.  He practiced medicine well into the 1960s.  Today, a four-year scholarship for nursing students is awarded yearly in his name.
