Saratoga County History Center Appoints New Executive Director

The Board of Trustees of the Saratoga County History Center announce the appointment of Suzanne Maloney as its new Executive Director. Maloney will assume her duties on April 1.  The History Center has been rebuilding since the COVID-19 pandemic left the position vacant for the past five years.

Maloney brings over twenty years of experience in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, and program management. For the past decade, she has operated a flower, herb, and vegetable farm, specializing in floral arrangements, supplying herbalists, and providing Community-Supported Agriculture.  In addition, she has served as the operations manager for the Albany Riverfront Collaborative and as a development associate for the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.

Her extensive background includes serving as Statewide Director of the State Employees Federated Appeal and as Executive Director of several organizations, including the Environmental Business Association of New York State, the New York State Nursery & Landscape Association, and the Invasive Plant Council of New York State.

“With over twenty years of experience in nonprofit and program management, I bring a deep understanding of how to connect resources, build partnerships, and implement sustainable strategies,” said Maloney. “I am eager to join the passionate team at the Saratoga County History Center and build on the great work already underway, ensuring that our history continues to inspire and inform future generations.”

The Saratoga County History Center, chartered by the New York State Education Department, operates out of Brookside Museum, a historic former hotel dating back to the 1790s in Ballston Spa. The History Center maintains a museum, a research library, and an extensive collection of artifacts and manuscripts related to Saratoga County’s history. The organization is dedicated to preserving and sharing local history through exhibits, publications, and innovative programming, illustrating the county’s people, industries, institutions and customs as they evolve over time.

Maloney will lead a team of volunteers and a staff of three, continuing the institution’s tradition of publishing books and articles, curating exhibits, and producing engaging in-person and online programs.

“Appointing a professional Executive Director begins our next adventure,” said Isobel Connell, President of the Board of Trustees. “With Suzanne’s leadership, combined with our talented staff and dedicated volunteers, I am excited for the future of the Saratoga County History Center.”

Maloney is committed to strengthening the History Center’s community connections and enhancing its fundraising initiatives. “Throughout my career, I’ve seen firsthand how building strong partnerships and fostering a sense of community is key to driving successful efforts,” she noted. “I look forward to leveraging this experience to further the History Center’s mission and impact.”

The History Center is partly supported by the New York State Council on the Arts and local municipal governments, including Saratoga County. However, it primarily relies on memberships, donations, and programs to sustain its operations.
