The public is welcome to view these exhibits at a reception at the Museum on Saturday May 4 2-4pm. \nBrookside Through the Years in the front hallway examines the people and businesses that have called Brookside home throughout its 232 year history. \nIn the Long Room gallery\, visitors can explore images of Broadway storefronts from Saratoga Springs in the late 1860s and discover the history of the early entrepreneurs and which modern businesses are housed in the surviving buildings. \nAnother new exhibit\, Unmentionables\, invites visitors to consider the history of undergarments and displays petticoats\, hoop skirts\, shirts\, stockings\, bustles\, and corsets from the museums extensive textile collection.

SUMMARY:2024 Public History Awards
DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the winners of the third annual Saratoga County Public History Awards.  The award recognizes individuals that have made a significant contribution to extending knowledge and understanding of the history of Saratoga County. A celebratory event will be held at Brookside Museum on Tuesday\, May 7\, beginning at 6 pm with a reception on the front porch of the Museum\, 21 Fairground Ave\, Ballston Spa.  They were selected by a committee of previous winners Carol Godette\, Jim Richmond\, Paul Perreault and Charlie Kuenzel\, joined by Michelle Isopo\, Director of the Saratoga Room at the Saratoga Springs Public Library.Pat Peck has had a lifelong interest in genealogy and local history that preceded her leadership in the formation of Heritage Hunters in 1993\, whose mission is the preservation of the genealogical records and historic materials related to Saratoga County families. Through her efforts and working with a core group of like-minded members\, Pat led the effort to develop several innovative educational outreach opportunities\, including an annual all-day conference with presentations by regional experts on a wide range of genealogical topics\, an annual History Faire\, and the creation of the SaratogaGenWeb page with a robust collection of local genealogical databases. In addition\, Pat has been a long-time volunteer at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa and was instrumental in the creation of the Irena Wooten Research Library at the History Center.  Dave Peck\, current President of Heritage Hunters said.   “Pat is the go-to person keeping Heritage Hunters and other groups like the Old Saratoga Historical Association in Schuylerville vibrant for the last 30 years and is eminently qualified for this award.” \nPriscilla Edwards has served as Edinburg’s town historian since 1986. For over thirty years she has written monthly articles for the town newsletter\, which have recently been published in a book\, My Mountains\, My People. Priscilla has taken a special interest in promoting local history among children. For many years she has taken Edinburg Common School 4th graders on a day long trip around the town\, visiting museums\, the covered bridge\, and other historic locations. Priscilla was a major contributor to the video “Harnessing Nature: Building the Great Sacandaga.” Lauren Roberts\, Saratoga County Historian and longtime friend of Priscilla said “Priscilla was an invaluable resource both in her knowledge and her collections\, which she generously allowed us to use in the film. SUMMARY:Sheep to Shawl Community Day
DESCRIPTION:The long-running interactive “Sheep to Shawl” program at Brookside Museum returns to the Saratoga County History Center. Sheep\, lambs\, farmers\, herders\, the famous Fred the Shearer\, and the Rock Day Spinning Guild will assemble on Brookside Museum’s front lawn to demonstrate every facet of sheep raising\, shearing\, and spinning to produce the wool clothing that was so ubiquitous in early America. Sheep to Shawl is a hands-on\, family-friendly event.  Young and the young-at-heart will have fun petting the sheep\, meeting farmers\, and participating in demonstrations.  A terrific opportunity to embrace the spring weather\, learn about Saratoga County’s agricultural past\, and enjoy some quality family time.  We are grateful to the Stewarts’ Shops Holiday Match program for their generous support of this educational opportunity.

DESCRIPTION:Find a large trove of rare and out-of-print Saratoga history books goes on sale at Brookside Museum\, Ballston Spa\, on Saturday\, June 22\, during the annual Craft and Antique Fair. \nThe books\, which are either library duplicates or were donated for sale\, include many of the most sought-after titles that cannot be found in bookstores.\nAmong the highlights are multiple copies of Sylvester’s History of Saratoga County (1877) and Grose’s History of Ballston Spa (1907)\, both of which remain reliable sources today\, as well as Waller’s Saratoga: Saga of an Impious Era (1966) with its many illustrations and entertaining perspective. \nMany other Saratoga County sources are represented in the sale\, including the large format Saratoga County Communities: An Historical Perspective (1980) with its town-by-town landmark maps. There are many individual town and village histories. \nOther subjects include horseracing\, historical fiction\, genealogical methods\, and history for young readers. A special feature of the sale is a group of town and village maps from the 1866 county atlas\, suitable for framing\, as are reproductions on canvas of Jesse S. Wooley photographs. \nJust inside the front door\, the museum shop will be open during the same hours\, offering its extensive selection of current county history books. \nThe sale will take place rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the museum’s broad front porch at the west end of Front Street. DESCRIPTION:Hamilton Craig\, a doctoral student at CUNY researching farmers movement in the United States\, and a native of Shushan\, Washington County\, will present a vivid portrayal of farm life in Wilton\, New Yorkbased on the 1910 diary of Wilton resident Mary Brainard. The diary reveals an intimate picture of a rural world in transition\, caught between the subsistence and barter economy of early America and the capitalist economy of modern America. SUMMARY:Stillwater Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:The History Center has added a 2024 walking tour of Stillwater led by Sara Kipp\, director of the Stillwater Public Library. The tour will begin at the Library parking lot adjacent to Blockhouse Park on Rt 4 Hudson Avenue\, the former location of many mills and factories in the late 1800s. Other stops along the way will include the 150 year old St. John’s Episcopal Church which will soon serve as the Stillwater Village Hall; the site of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp  which housed workers from 1939–1942 developing the Saratoga Battlefield as an historic site; the Newland-Wood firehouse which was re-built in 1897\, plus many more. After a one mile walk\, the tour will end in the new library with many historical images and maps of the Champlain Canal which is celebrating its 200th anniversary.\n\n\n\nA $10 donation per person is suggested.\n\n\n\nRegister HERE.

Based on her new book On This Spot: Saratoga Springs\, Carol will describe how she was able to create images of a life now past\, through first person interviews with the owners and their families. Carol was honored by The New York Press Association in 2021\, and was a recipient of the Saratoga County History Center Public History in 2022. Join Hudson Crossing Park Executive Director Kate Morse and resident local historian Mike Biekiewicz for this easy\, one mile walk. Kate and Mike will share the history of the First Nations who called the area home\, show you the site of British General Burgoyne’s “Bridge of Boats” on the way to England’s historic loss during the Battles of Saratoga\, talk about how the Champlain Canal shaped the community and was instrumental in the Underground Railroad\, and more. We will also discuss the unique challenges of working as environmental stewards along industrialized waterways and the work that Hudson Crossing Park has done over the last two decades to educate and foster the next generation of environmental stewards. \nWhen entering the park\, continue over Champlain Canal Lock 5 until you reach Hudson Crossing Park’s signature wrought iron gate. Discover how as a young man Arkell embarked on a mission to draw visitors from nearby Saratoga Springs to his mountaintop paradise. Those visitors would include Civil War general and two-term president Ulysses S. Grant\, who died in a cottage at the resort in 1885. SUMMARY:Experts Next Door #25 - The CCC in Saratoga County and the Adirondacks
DESCRIPTION:The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began on March 31\, 1933 under President Roosevelt’s New Deal to relieve the poverty and unemployment of the Depression. Workers built trails\, roads\, campsites\, dams\, stocked fish\, built and maintained fire tower observer cabins and telephone lines\, fought fires\, and planted millions of trees. The CCC disbanded in 1942 due to the need for men in WW II. \nThere were over 200 CCC camps in New York State\, including one locally in Stillwater\, from where men worked developing Saratoga Battlefield as an historic site. \nJoin Marty Podskoch\, historian and author of 11 books\, as he discusses the role and legacy of the CCC in our area. \nMarty is the author of 11 books\, including “Adirondack Civilian Conservation Corps Camps: Their History\, Memories and Legacy of the CCC“\, and also writes a weekly column\, “Adirondack Stories“\, in 5 Adirondack newspapers. He is presently gathering information on the CCC camps in VT for future books. Podskoch is keenly interested in meeting individuals who may have CCC stories and photos to contribute to his next book.
