Have you ever sipped water from the Sans Souci Spring? What did feedsack cloth from Noonan Brothers’ Feed store feel like? How did the trolley bell sound as it worked its way through the village? Explore these oft-forgotten details of a community’s history on this interactive tour with SCHC Director of Education Anne Clothier.\nBased on a walking tour usually shared with elementary school students\, this is an excellent opportunity for parents or grandparents to bring younger generations along. However\, all ages are welcome to join us as we explore the history of Ballston Spa’s industries\, hotels\, schools\, mineral springs\, and more.\nThe tour is approximately 1.25 miles. Please dress for the weather – sturdy shoes and a water bottle are recommended.\nWe will meet and end at Brookside Museum\, 21 Fairground Ave in Ballston Spa. SUMMARY:Iron Hearted Regiment
DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center will host David Brooks\, Education Director at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hunter\, N.Y.on Wednesday\, September 13th at 7pm in the Long Room at Brookside Museum. \nDuring the Civil War\, Colonel Simeon Sammons received authority to recruit a regiment in the counties of Fulton\, Hamilton\, Montgomery\, and Saratoga\, with headquarters at Fonda. On August 26\, 1862\, it mustered into the service of the United States for three years. Join local historian David Brooks in an exploration of the history of the “Iron-Hearted Regiment.”\, the 115th New York Infantry Regiment. Journey along with them from Upstate NY to the Deep South and back. Discover the battles they faced on the front line and those experienced from within. \nDavid Brooks also sits on the board of the Fulton County Historical Society\, based out of the Fulton County Museum in Gloversville\, NY. As a native of that County\, growing up he heard tales of local history and how his own ancestors fought to preserve the Union during the tumultuous Civil War. \nA donation of $5 per registration is recommended\, to support the programs of Saratoga County History Center. \nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Ballston's Sacrifice in the War with Mexico
DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center will present a program by John Cromie and Dave Waite on the Mexican War and the local men who sacrificed their lives in the struggle on Thursday October 5th at 7pm in the Long Room at Brookside Museum. \nThe War with Mexico was the inevitable result of the constant westward movement which came to be known as the United States’ “Manifest Destiny” to expand our nation to the Pacific. In 1847 local men answered the call by joining volunteer and regular army regiments to support the war effort. Some did not return. \nJohn Cromie is a local historian\, and Saratoga County History Center Trustee.  Dave Waite\, is a well-known photographer\, videographer and Brookside Museum volunteer. Both men are published authors who have made extensive contributions to Saratoga County history. \nThis program is free to the public. SUMMARY:Low Bridge on the Erie Canal
DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center will host John Scherer\, Clifton Park Historian\, for a program entitled “Low Bridge on the Erie Canal” on Monday\, October 23 at 7pm in the Long Room at Brookside Museum. \nWhen the Erie Canal was completed in 1825\, it was an engineering marvel and was touted as the eighth wonder of the world. Thirteen miles of the canal was constructed along the southern Saratoga County border paralleling the Mohawk River. \nJohn Scherer will highlight the history of the local section of the canal using historical photographs and explore the existing remains and the colorful local characters who worked on the canal. \nThis event is free to the public. SUMMARY:Men and Women of Saratoga County Who Answered the Call in World War One
DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center will host Paul Perreault\, Malta Town Historian\, for a program entitled “Men and Women of Saratoga County Who Answered the Call in World War One” on Wednesday \, November 8 at 7pm in the Long Room at Brookside Museum. \nNovember 11\, 2023 marks the 105th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War One. Of all of the men and women who fought in the American Expeditionary Force\, 10% were from New York State and many of those were from Saratoga County.  \nSeventy-two from the County died from either combat wounds or disease contracted while serving\, eight of those men were from Waterford. This is the story of some of those from our County who answered the call\, gleaned from local records sent to the State Archives. \nThis event is free to the public. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Sounds in Winter concert series\, the James Street String Quartet will be performing in the Long Room of Brookside Museum on Saturday\, November 18 at 3pm.  The concert is free and open to the public.  Please register at https://brooksidemuseum.networkforgood.com/events/64080-sounds-in-winter-concert-james-street-string-quartet\n\n\n\n\nThe performance will be approximately one hour long and feature the following pieces: \nMerton Townhall (Pride and Prejudice)  –  Henry Purcell \nLullaby  –  George Gershwin \nJuba\, from String Quartet No. 2  –  Florence Price \nString Quartet Op. 1\, No. 6  –  Chevalier de Saint-Georges \nString Quartet Op. 59\, No. 3  –  Ludwig van Beethoven \nThe James Street String Quartet has prepared and performed six different programs at various locations including libraries\, churches\, and even a cidery.  The four musicians\, Holly Larson (violinist)\, Chelsea Reeves (violinist)\, Jody Van Voris (violist)\, and Heather Walker (cellist) are professionals who play in local orchestras and teach in the Capital Region.  The quartet can be found on Facebook. \nSaratoga Arts made this program possible through the Community Arts Regrant Program\, funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.  The series is co-sponsored by the Village of Ballston Spa and the American Federation of Musicians and Musicians Performance Trust Fund.

DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center will hold its annual membership meeting on Sunday\, November 19\, at 2 p.m. in the museum’s Long Room. Following treasurer’s and president’s reports\, the Nominating Committee will present candidates for trustee posts and the outgoing president will explain the proposed budget for 2024.\nFollowing the business meeting\, Amy Godine of Saratoga Springs will speak on the subject of her new book\, The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier\, scheduled for release by Syracuse University Press the preceding week. The Black Woods chronicles the history of Black pioneers in New York’s northern wilderness. From the late 1840s into the 1860s\, they migrated to the Adirondacks to build farms and to vote. On their new-worked land\, they could meet the $250 property requirement New York’s constitution imposed on Black voters in 1821\, and claim the rights of citizenship. The book will be available for purchase that evening in the museum’s shop. DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center (SCHC) at Brookside Museum announces a virtual presentation by Dr. Kieran O’Keefe on “Loyalists in the Hudson Valley during the Revolutionary War”. This will be the 23rd presentation in the Center’s popular speaker series “Experts Next Door” and will take place at 7pm on Wednesday\, January 31st through Zoom. \nThe talk will explore lives of colonists in the Hudson Valley during the Revolutionary War. It will examine why some colonists remained loyal to the British\, what the war was like for Loyalists in the region\, and what happened to the Loyalists after the conflict. \nThe event is open to the public. It is free for SCHC members\, and $5 for non-members. He has published several articles in scholarly publications and is currently working on a book manuscript titled Suffering for the Crown: The Hudson Valley Loyalists\, Violence\, and Forced Migration in Revolutionary North America. \nThe History Center is proud to support the Saratoga County 250th American Revolution Commission\, created by the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors to recognize the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution in Saratoga County.

SUMMARY:A Night at Aldridge House: An Evening Tavern Experience
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday February 15 at 6 PM\, Brookside Museum is hosting an immersive evening of food\, music\, and stories.  The event\, A Night at Aldridge House: An Evening Tavern Experience will encourage participants to step back into the late 18th century.  Opening in 1792\, the building that now houses the museum was a hotel that hosted guests to Ballston Spa for over 50 years. \nTicket holders will enjoy a night of hearty stew\, crusty bread\, refreshing cider\, and jaunty music. In the spirit of the upcoming holidays\, we will hear about George Washington’s visits to our area from local author John Oliver\, who will also discuss a secret real estate mission that led our first president to the region.  Meals will be served by historical interpreters in 18th century clothing. \nTickets are $25 per person\, $20 for SCHC members. \nWe are sorry\, but this event is sold out. DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum is offering local students an opportunity to travel back in time to uncover local history.  Each day we will explore the foods\, games\, chores\, dangers\, and challenges of five different eras.  Discover how historians use archeology\, documents\, artwork\, photographs\, and folklore to find out how people lived long ago.\n\n“We love giving local students opportunities to interact with the rich history of our region through hands-on experiences\,” says Anne Clothier\, Director of Education at SCHC.  Each day will include a student-made snack\, toys & games\, and opportunities for making craft items to take home and keep.  The program will run daily from Monday\, February 19 through Friday\, February 23 from 1 – 4 pm each day.  Best suited for students aged 8-12.  The program is $100 per student for one week (15 hours). DESCRIPTION:After the Revolutionary War\, the new nation’s earliest resorts were spas following the tradition of those in England. Ballston Spa was one of the earliest and soon eclipsed its rivals in terms of springs\, hotels and amenities. New York City’s Nicholas Low was the most enterprising of the Spa’s developers. By the 1830s\, however\, Saratoga Springs’ resort had surpassed Ballston Spa\, which continued\, using its water power and railroad to establish the mills of the Industrial Revolution. \nJoin Ted Corbett\, former director of the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and author of a dozen books\, as he discusses “The Rise and Fall of Ballston Spa as a Resort”. \nTed’s book on “The Making of American Resorts” featuring not only Ballston Spa\, but also Saratoga Springs and Lake George\, is published by Rutgers University Press. \nThis is an online event. Trivia categories will include questions on local history as well as the standard trivia topics. \nKaren Strack-James\, who is leading the History Center team planning the event is excited about partnering with Anne’s Washington Inn. “This gives folks a fabulous opportunity to enjoy the hospitality of the very historic Anne’s Washington Inn\, as well as a fun way to reach out to new people who might just be learning about the History Center for the first time\,” she said. “We are encouraging groups to form a team and sponsor a table for a night of fun.” \nThe Bokan family has long been supportive of the Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum. “We are so excited to see our space used for such a fun event and for such a great cause!
