SUMMARY:From the Ground Up: How Responsible Metal Detecting Connects Us to Local History
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging and informative talk that delves into the fascinating world of metal detecting\, a hobby that connects us directly to the past. Over the last 8 years\, local detectorist Brandon Dingeman has traversed Saratoga County and beyond\, bringing to light incredible stories through relics hidden just beneath our feet. \nIn this session\, you will learn the fundamentals of responsible metal detecting\, including the “golden rules” for ethical detecting\, essential equipment and site strategy. We’ll explore the critical role of historical research and the use of digital tools to find sites of interest and record crucial situational context of items found. \nThe presentation will conclude with a look back at some of the most memorable moments and significant discoveries from Brandon’s own journey in the hobby\, showcasing how metal detecting is an exciting way to contextualize daily life of local neighbors that came before us and preserve this history for future generations. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about how these discoveries are made\, this talk offers a unique perspective on the stories the ground has yet to tell. \n  \nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Seneca Ray Stoddard and Jesse Sumner Wooley: Kindred Spirits
DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center (SCHC) at Brookside Museum announces a presentation by Dr. Daniel Way\, entitled “Seneca Ray Stoddard and Jesse Sumner Wooley: Kindred Spirits”. The event will take place at 7pm on Monday\, September 8th at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa. The photographers Seneca Ray Stoddard and Jesse Sumner Wooley were both born in Wilton in Saratoga County. Stoddard\, through his catalogue of photographs\, is often cited as a major influence in the formation of the Adirondack Park. He traveled extensively\, photographing as he went. Wooley too\, almost 20 years younger\, not only was well known locally as a portrait photographer\, but also traveled widely through New York\, across the United States and Europe\, leaving behind an impressive collection of images from his travels. Both men were eager to embrace new photographic innovations of their time. Dr. Way\, retired primary care physician from Glens Falls\, and Stoddard’s great great nephew\, will show many examples of the photography of both men\, and examine what little is known about the connections between them. Copies of Dr. Way’s books will also be available to purchase. Brookside Museum is fortunate enough to hold a large collection of Wooley photographs and lantern slides. \nRegister HERE
