SUMMARY:Experts Next Door: New York's Great Lost Ballpark
DESCRIPTION:New York’s Great Lost Ballparks tells the story of New York playing grounds and ballparks of yesteryear. Organized by region and city\, the book includes a complete list of New York’s historic ballparks in an easy-to-read guidebook format. Each listing includes the name and location of the park\, the years in operation\, the names of the professional clubs that called it their home\, the park’s seating capacity\, and a “Fun Fact” or two that distinguishes each locale. More famous ballparks include an extended history that examines the importance of the field in the annals of the game. The book is richly illustrated with historic photos of the parks and players and ten maps of key locations (including New York City’s boroughs). Special attention is given to locales that hosted the Negro League and all-women teams. \nBob Carlin is probably the best known clawhammer style banjoist performing today. He has taken the distinctive southern banjo style to appreciative audiences all over the US\, Canada\, Europe\, Australia and Japan. Carlin is a three-time winner of the Frets Magazine readers poll\, and has four Rounder albums and several instruction manuals and videos for the banjo. SUMMARY:Saratoga & the Civil War: The 115th "Iron-Hearted Regiment" at War
DESCRIPTION:During the Civil War\, Colonel Simeon Sammons received authority to recruit a regiment in the counties of Fulton\, Hamilton\, Montgomery\, and Saratoga\, with headquarters at Fonda. On August 26\, 1862\, the 115th regiment mustered into the service of the United States for three years. Join local historian David Brooks in an exploration of the history of the “Iron-Hearted Regiment.” Learn of their unique experiences as they traveled from Upstate New York to Virgina and on to the Deep South and back. Discover the battles they faced on the front line and those experienced from within. This is the second in the American’s At War series presented by the History Center during 2026. \nDavid Brooks is a local historian and has an American History degree from the State University of New York. He currently lives in Northville along the banks of the Great Sacandaga Lake. He serves as the Education Director for the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site\, is a member on the Board of Trustees for both Fulton and Montgomery County Historical Societies\, is a CAB representative for WMHT\, former past president of the Mohawk Valley Museums Consortium\, and former board member of the Palatine Settlement Society. SUMMARY:Experts Next Door: Lavender\, Red\, White\, and Blue: Sites of LGBTQ Revolution in New York State
DESCRIPTION:In accordance with the United States Semiquincentennial\, Dr. Jeff Iovannone\, an expert in LGBTQ heritage conservation\, will move beyond standard narratives of American revolution and urban LGBTQ history to highlight sites of LGBTQ revolution across New York State. Taken collectively\, these sites evidence New York State’s rich LGBTQ heritage\, the contributions of LGBTQ people in shaping New York’s history\, and the fact that LGBTQ and American history are one and the same. \nJeff Iovannone is a social historian from upstate New York who specializes in conserving LGBTQ history through the built environment. He holds a PhD in American Studies from the University at Buffalo and a Masters in Historic Preservation Planning and LGBT Studies from Cornell University\, where he was awarded the Biddy Martin Graduate Prize for LGBTQ research. Iovannone currently works in the Survey and National Register Unit of the New York State Division for Historic Preservation. \nSaratoga Pride promotes the safety and well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community in Saratoga County by increasing visibility\, building allyship and creating educational opportunities. Saratoga Pride’s year-round programing includes sports leagues\, a book club\, support groups\, networking and educational programming. SUMMARY:Songs and Sounds of the Anti-Rent Movement in Upstate New York\, with Nancy Newman
DESCRIPTION:Upstate New York’s Anti-Rent Movement is considered the last struggle over feudalism in the United States. Tenant farmers in the Hudson-Mohawk region engaged in organized protest throughout the 1840s to contest monopoly ownership of the land they worked. Arguing their cause in newspapers\, on broadsides\, and at rallies\, their aspirations also took shape in poetry and song. \nMore than twenty sets of lyrics (and one instrumental composition) were written at various stages of the conflict. Some of their musical sources\, such as “Old Dan Tucker” and “Bruce’s Address\,” are still well known. Each song offers insight into the role vernacular music played in one of the nineteenth century’s major social reform movements. This is the first book to gather the poetry and corresponding tunes into one publication. During this talk\, discussion of this major 19th-century reform movement will be interspersed with Anti-Rent songs from broadsides and newspapers. \nNancy Newman is Professor in the Department of Music and Theatre and Joint Faculty in the Department of Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at the State University of New York at Albany. She is the author of Songs and Sounds of the Anti-Rent Movement as well Good Music for a Free People: The Germania Musical Society in Nineteenth-Century America. \nYour donations power everything we do. SUMMARY:Discovering George Foster Peabody with Glenn Underwood
DESCRIPTION:Glenn Underwood is an artist\, author\, and historian from Upstate New York whose family operates Twin Birches Cottages in Lake George\, a property that stands on the former grounds of Abenia\, the summer estate of banker and philanthropist George Foster Peabody. \n\nIn 2017\, Underwood began a research journey at the New York Public Library’s Brooke Russell Astor Reading Room for Rare Books and Manuscripts\, where he examined the Yaddo Records and George Foster Peabody files. What began as an effort to find photographs or documents connecting Peabody to the land now home to Twin Birches soon evolved into a much larger discovery. \nThrough Peabody’s letters and correspondence with family\, friends\, governors\, presidents\, and leading cultural figures of his era\, Underwood uncovered the story of a man whose influence extended far beyond Lake George\, shaping Saratoga Springs\, New York State\, and even the nation. \nOver the past eight years\, Underwood has meticulously researched and documented Peabody’s friendships with Edward Morse Shepard\, Spencer and Katrina Trask\, Franklin Delano Roosevelt\, Adolph Ochs\, and John Howard Melish\, among others. His work also explores Peabody’s role in regional projects such as Prospect Mountain\, Shepard Park\, Diamond Island\, the Wiawaka Center for Women\, the Lake George Association\, the Caldwell-Lake George Library\, the Saratoga Reservation Commission\, Saratoga Spa State Park\, the New York State Forest Tree Nursery\, and Yaddo. \nThe culmination of this research is Underwood’s new book\, Discovering George Foster Peabody\, a comprehensive work that brings together archival research\, correspondence\, and rare photographs to reintroduce one of New York’s most quietly influential figures to modern readers. \nRegister HERE
