DESCRIPTION:The Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum is pleased to sponsor a presentation by Professor Myra B. Armstead of Bard College entitled “From Slavery to Freedom: Blacks in Saratoga from the Colonial Period through Gradual Manumission.” Dr. Armstead has a deep understanding of African-American social and cultural life and is well known for her first book\, ‘Lord\, Please Don’t Take Me in August’ a comparative study of black life in the resort communities of Saratoga Springs\, NY\, and Newport\, RI during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. \nHer presentation will be held at the Dyer-Phelps Memorial AME Zion Church\, 122 Crescent St. in Saratoga Springs on Saturday\, September 10 at 10:30 am and is based on research supported by a collaboration between the Organization of American Historians and the National Parks Service. \nThis event is free\, but donations would be gratefully appreciated. \nThis event is sold-out.

SUMMARY:Historians' Walking Tour - Forest Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, August 31 at 10am . As part of the Historians’ Walking Tour series\, Rick Reynolds\, Ballston Town Historian\, will lead a tour of the site on Ballston Lake\, which from 1901-1927 was home to the Forest Park Amusement Park.  This was a “destination vacation” for people of the time as well as a popular place for locals.  The tour will include viewing the layout of the park as well as experiencing some of the buildings and structures that still exist today. This is a walking tour of approximately 1 mile total on mostly level land and takes place in wooded areas some of the time.  It is advisable to wear comfortable clothing\, good walking shoes or sneakers\, and protect against ticks. Tour begins at 62 West Side Drive in Ballston Lake next to the closed Carney’s Restaurant\, with parking along the road.\n \nThis event is sold out.

DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin Saratoga County Historian Lauren Roberts Monday\, August 15 at 10am for a one-hour walking tour along the county’s popular Zim Smith Trail. Leaving from the parking area in Round Lake on Curry Road\, learn about how the route of one of New York ‘s earliest railroads changed over time to become designated a National Recreation Trail. Abandoned by the D & H in 1965\, this former railroad line was acquired by Saratoga County to help meet its growing infrastructure needs. Visiting the sites that relate to General Philip Schuyler and his family within the current landscape. Philip Schuyler was an American general in the Revolutionary War and a United States Senator from New York. He established a large plantation in Saratoga and helped develop the area. \nMeet at Schuylerville Veterans’ Memorial Park: US 4 and NY 32 adjacent to Fish Creek Schuylerville\, NY 12871.  Parking is available along the village streets.  The tour distance is expected to be one mile and the duration approximately one hour. SUMMARY:New Light on Saratoga’s Indigenous Past
DESCRIPTION:New Light on Saratoga’s Indigenous Past \n\nJoin us Tuesday\, July 12 at 7pm for  New Light on Saratoga’s Indigenous Past. Professor Karim Tiro\, of Xavier University\, Cincinnati\, OH is completing a study commissioned by the National Park Service to better understand Saratoga’s Native past. He will share findings about Saratoga’s origins as a fishing station and religious mission; the Oneida refugees at Wilton during the American Revolution; and Atiatoharongwen\, a Saratoga-born Mohawk man of Black and Abenaki parentage whom Washington referred to as a friend.  Dr. Tiro is a historian specializing in North America from the16th through the 19th centuries. His publications include The People of the Standing Stone: The Oneida Nation from the Revolution through the Era of Removal and Along the Hudson and Mohawk: The 1790 Journey of Count Paolo Andreani. This is an in-person event that will take place at Brookside Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, July 9th at 2pm for the Solomon Northup Scripter Award presentation. In Support of the current Black History exhibit at Brookside Museum\, Melissa Howell\, a Solomon Northup descendant\, has loaned the Scripter Award\, presented on behalf of Solomon Northup by the University of Southern California\, to the Saratoga County History Center\, along with other memorabilia to be displayed. The Award honors Northup and recognizes the work of screenwriter John Ridley who wrote the script for the 2013 movie “12 Years a Slave”.  Ms Howell will present the Award along with a talk entitled “Embracing the Legacy of Solomon Northup” at Brookside Museum. \nReserve your free ticket HERE.

This last year we have had exhibits celebrating 100 years of Stewarts ice cream\, Hats\, Black History Experiences in the County\, Mystery Photographs\, Country Stores and County Life in Photographs. We have welcomed school parties and families to Sheep to Shawl. We have had talks and walks. We want to offer more\, and need your support. \nSCHS/Brookside Museum will be selling Brooks’ BBQ chicken dinners to go on Friday\, June 3rd\, 3-6pm for $14. DESCRIPTION:Sheep to Shawl Community Day\nMay 15\n1 pm -4 pm\nThe long-running interactive “Sheep to Shawl” program at Brookside Museum returns at the Saratoga County History Center. Sheep\, lambs\, farmers\, herders\, and shearers\, including the famous Fred the Shearer\, and the Rock Day Spinning Guild will assemble on Brookside Museum’s front lawn to demonstrate every facet of sheep raising\, shearing\, and spinning to produce the wool clothing that was so ubiquitous in early America. Sheep to Shawl is an interactive\, family-friendly event.  Young and the young-at-heart will have fun petting the sheep\, meeting farmers\, and participating in demonstrations.  A terrific opportunity to enjoy the spring weather\, learn about Saratoga County’s agricultural past\, and enjoy some quality family time.\n\nWe are grateful for the generous support of Stewart’s Holiday Match.
