Volunteers play an integral role at the Saratoga County History Center. As we continue to grow, so will our need for community support and participation. Because we are a non-profit, we rely on volunteers for support in many areas — to share their creativity, talents, and expertise, or simply use their skills to assist with special events, daily operations, and programs. Put simply, we could not exist without your help.
Volunteer opportunities vary widely, from Brookside Museum building maintenance to working on collections to helping with gardens and greenery. We also welcome help with programming and events.
Being a volunteer offers excellent benefits: fun, positive, and rewarding experiences paid to you in smiles, increased knowledge, and volunteer hours! You will be joining a close family of people dedicated to history and community service.
The various positions we are currently looking for include:
Building and Grounds Assistants – The History Center operates Brookside Museum, 225-year-old building that requires regular upkeep and repair from both professional and hobbyist craftsmen. We are looking for people interested in light carpentry, painting, landscaping and general maintenance and repairs.
Collections Volunteers – Do you love working with historical objects, photographs or documents? Help the History Center document, inventory, and display items in our collection and assist in maintaining our online inventory listing.
Communications – Do you have a technology or writing skills? We need volunteers skilled in web site development, Facebook, and other social media, as well as written communications – letters, brochures and press releases.
Genealogy & Research Volunteers – Are you a family tree detective? Do you enjoy census records, cemetery maps, and family histories? Come work with the History Center collections as well as the Heritage Hunters Library and other local resources to help answer genealogical queries and research upcoming exhibits.
Green Team – Do you like history and the environment? The History Center is looking for volunteers to help with community engagement by joining the “Green Team.” Green Team participants work to improve Brookside Museum’s historic grounds, as well as public spaces across Saratoga County. Volunteers make a commitment to monthly clean and beautify their area. Duties include picking up litter, weeding, gardening, and other forms of general cleanup. Volunteers do make a difference in our community! The Green Team actively operates from April to November. Participants need to be at least 14 years old.
‘Hats Off’ Ambassadors – Are you willing to visit sites and exhibits all over Saratoga County and wear a hat? Our ‘Hats Off’ Ambassadors have fun supporting all sites that have a connection with local history. You will learn more about the site, participate in “hats off” ceremonies to create the photo opportunity, and interact with the public. In addition, ambassadors will be asked to help with History Center social media campaigns by sharing and posting History Center stories, spread History Center information by word of mouth, and become a neighborhood leader.
Museum Assistants – These volunteers are the public face of the History Center and the Brookside Museum. They will greet visitors, handle museum store sales, assist with clerical tasks, and help keep the public areas of the museum tidy.
